Abundance analyses of a sample of five faint blue stars in the galactic halo
نویسنده
چکیده
High resolution optical spectra of five faint high galactic latitude B-type stars, identified from a magnitude limited survey, have been analysed using LTE model atmosphere calculations. All targets have small projected rotational velocities (≤30 km s−1) and hence may be evolved objects. This is supported by their chemical compositions, which indicate that they are old Population II stars; two stars also show enhanced nitrogen abundances probably due to the mixing of nuclear processed material to their surfaces. Their atmospheric parameters are consistent with a post-Asymptotic Giant Branch evolutionary status, although two targets may have evolved directly off the horizontal branch.

Rotational velocities of B-type stars from the Edinburgh-Cape survey
The projected rotational velocity distribution for a sample of 34 high Galactic latitude B-type stars from the Edinburgh-Cape Faint Blue Object Survey is presented to investigate the evolutionary status of the group as a whole. Statistical analyses of the distribution show it to be similar to that expected if the sample contained mainly normal Population i early B-type stars, although a contami...
متن کاملFaint Blue Objects in the Hubble Deep Field–South Revealed: White Dwarfs, Subdwarfs, and Quasars
We explore the nature of the faint blue objects in the Hubble Deep Field South. We have derived proper motions for the point sources in the Hubble Deep Field South using a 3-year baseline. Combining our proper motion measurements with spectral energy distribution fitting enabled us to identify 4 quasars and 42 stars, including 3 white dwarf candidates. Two of these white dwarf candidates, HDFS ...
متن کاملFaint, Moving Objects in the Hubble Deep Field: Components of the Dark Halo?
The deepest optical image of the sky, the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in December 1995, has been compared to a similar image taken in December 1997. Two very faint, blue, isolated and unresolved objects are found to display a substantial apparent proper motion, 23±5mas/yr and 26±5mas/yr; a further three objects at the detection limit of the second epo...
متن کاملThe Century Survey Galactic Halo Project I: Stellar Spectral Analysis
The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project is a photometric and spectroscopic survey from which we select relatively blue stars (V −R < 0.30 mag) as probes of the Milky Way halo. The Survey strip spans the range of Galactic latitude 35 < b < 88, allowing us to study the nature of populations of stars and their systematic motions as a function of Galactic latitude. One of our primary goals is to u...
متن کاملThe Chemical Evolution of the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present an abundance analysis based on high resolution spectra of 8 stars selected to span the full range in metallicity in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We find [Fe/H] for the sample stars ranges from −1.5 to −3.0 dex. Combining our sample with previously published work for a total of 14 luminous Draco giants, we show that the abundance ratios [Na/Fe], [Mg/Fe] and [Si/Fe] for the Draco...
